How it all started

We didn't start with a business plan. We started with a conversation.

It was June 2025, and we were talking about how hard it is to find good local stores. Not chain stores — the kind of places where the owner knows your name, where the products have a story behind them, and where you leave feeling like you just discovered something special.

The problem wasn't that these stores didn't exist. They were everywhere — tucked into strip malls, down side streets, at farmers markets on Saturday mornings. The problem was it was hard to find you unless they already knew you were there.

So we asked ourselves: what if there was one place where you could discover all the local shops in your community? Not a big corporate marketplace that ships everything from a warehouse — but something that actually helps you walk into a real store and meet a real person.

Community coming together

We built it ourselves

We didn't have investors or a big team. Just a laptop, a lot of late nights, and the belief that North Carolina's local businesses deserved better.

We started by talking to store owners — the woman who makes candles by hand after putting her kids to bed, the family that's run a pet store for three generations and still opens the doors at 7am every morning, the baker who gets up at 4am to make bread from scratch because she refuses to cut corners. These are entrepreneurs who pour everything they have into their craft — their time, their savings, their weekends — and they're building something real.

That's when we knew we were onto something. Not a tech startup trying to "disrupt" an industry — just a group of locals building a tool to help our neighbors find each other.

What Cumulare means to us

The word "cumulare" comes from Latin — it means to gather, to pile up, to accumulate. We chose it because that's exactly what we want to do: gather the best local businesses in one place so you can discover the treasures in your own backyard.

But it's about more than just shopping. When you buy from a local store, that money stays in your community. It pays for Little League uniforms and school supplies. It keeps your neighborhood interesting and unique. It means the person behind the counter might coach your kid's soccer team.

We believe that matters. We believe your community is worth discovering, and we're honored to help people do exactly that.

Where we're headed

Our dream is simple: that one day, whenever someone in NC is looking for something — a birthday gift, a bag of locally roasted coffee, a toy for their kid — their first thought is, "Let me check Cumulare."

We're building something different — a platform rooted in community. We want to help you find what's special about where you live.

Come along for the ride

Whether you're a store owner looking for more local customers, or a shopper who wants to discover what's in your neighborhood — we'd love for you to be part of this.
